Subrayen receives maiden Proteas call-up for Windies tour
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Hollywoodbets Dolphins spinner Prenelan Subrayen has
received a maiden call-up to the Proteas test squad for their upcoming tour of
the West Indies next month.
Subrayen has been a stand-out for the Durban franchise for a number of seasons in both red and white ball cricket and finished the last 4-Day campaign with 19 wickets at an average of 18.89 and with best figures of 6/24.
The off-spinner joins fellow Dolphins Keshav Maharaj, George Linde and Tabraiz Shamsi as the spinners that have been selected in the squad for the tour of the Caribbean where the pitches are expected to assist the slower bowlers.
The squads that were announced on Tuesday included a T20 squad that will play five matches against the Windies after the two-test series and a squad that will play Ireland in three ODI’s and three T20I’s.
The 50 over matches against Ireland will form part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.
For convenor of selectors Victor Mpitsang it’s an exciting time for the national men’s side.
“This is a massive
outing for the Proteas,” Mpitsang said. “We have a fully fit team with an
exciting balance of youth and experience.
“The Selection Panel is confident that it has put together an exciting and
excited, young group of cricketers that will be well led by Dean (Elgar) and
Temba (Bavuma).
The selection of four spinners in the test squad is a result of what teams have come to expect from the conditions in the Caribbean.
“The Caribbean is well-known for its low and slow wickets and we have ensured that we have chosen the personnel needed for every eventuality on this very important excursion.
“While there aren’t any (ICC World Test Championship) points to play for, it is still of vital importance for South Africa to produce winning results through a steadily growing and high-performing cricket pipeline.”
Both the T20I’s against the Windies and Ireland are going to be important elements for the Proteas as they prepare for the T20 World Cup at the end of the year but the ODI’s against the Shamrocks will also be important.
“The historic tour to Ireland is crucial for points towards our qualification for the 2023 Cricket World Cup and preparation for the T20 World Cup later this year.
“This is the start of our road to these trophies and every tour will see us field our absolute best sides,” Mpitsang added.
Dean Elgar will take up the reins of the test side officially for the first time in June and the next era of South African cricket has arrived which excites the convenor of selectors.
““The team has been in a rebuilding phase for a while now but we are satisfied that the return on investment is going to show itself sooner rather than later.
“We have to trust the process that has been put in place and support our team while they find themselves and their way.
“These are truly exciting times in South African cricket, with an exciting new leadership group that is determined to return the team back to its winning ways.”
The first test match in the Caribbean takes place at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia from 10-14 June.
