Spieth back to full strength after Covid-19 infection
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Three-time major champion Jordan Spieth will be back in action this week after contracting Covid-19 following his third place finish at the Masters last month.
Spieth managed to break a four-year drought when he won the Texas Open last month before an impressive outing at the Masters in Augusta that saw him finish three shots off the eventual winner Hideki Matsuyama.
Following his result at Augusta, the 2017 British Open champion was forced to take a month off in order to recover from the virus and get fit for this week's AT&T Byron Nelson.
"I took kind of a week off, and then I ended up, actually, getting Covid, so then I was out for a little while," Spieth told AFP. "So I'm just kind of starting to get it back the last week or so and get back on track.
"I've only played a couple rounds and so I'm looking to kind of maybe knock a little rust off that I didn't think would necessarily be here."
Despite having travelled following the Masters Spieth is still unsure as to how he contracted Covid-19 and felt some serious symptoms for a few days.
"It was bad for a day and a half and then it was just kind of annoying for the next five days, kind of lost energy and sinus stuff, and after that I started to get full strength back.
"The last week and a half now I've been acting as if it never happened. I've just gone about my days feeling full energy and being able to hit kind of full workouts and practice sessions and all that kind of stuff.
"Just kind of set me back a little. If there's ever a good time during the season, it kind of worked out OK."
"I guess it certainly could have been worse," he said. "So I was lucky with that."
The 28th ranked player in the world will tee it up with Scottie Scheffler and Will Zalatoris for the opening round of the Byron Nelson this week.
