Soweto Derby headlines DSTV Premiership action this weekend

Both sides have had indifferent starts to their season’s however they are separated by just two points on the league table with the Sea Robbers holding the advantage over their rivals going into the clash kicking off at 15:30 on Saturday afternoon.

Chiefs boss Stuart Baxter has a strong record against their neighbours with three wins in nine meetings and just one defeat across his two stints at helm at Naturena.

Baxter goes into this one knowing that his side need to claim the bragging rights.

“Every derby is a must win,” Baxter said. “I’ve never been involved in a derby where my team is happy with a draw.

“The fans don’t want that either so we want to put together a game plan that will win us the game.”

Speaking before the match Baxter is concerned that the Soweto Derby might lose its prestige if the two clubs aren’t challenging for trophies.

“Chiefs and Pirates have had their issues in recent years," Baxter said to Sowetan Live. "You can look at it and say that Rangers and Celtic is a top game, Barcelona and Madrid is a top game. All the derbies are top games but Tottenham and Arsenal has threatened to be a ruin,” said Baxter.

“I think the Soweto derby can manage in this sort of situation for a while but not forever because then people will say it’s not the derby, actually.

“Pirates against Sundowns or Chiefs against Sundowns is the big one, even though traditionally it’s not. So we must address this by getting better.”

Heading into the clash Baxter’s opposite number Mandla Ncikazi says that his side have a very definitive structure that they will keep in the match, however he knows that Chiefs have game breakers in their ranks.

“We have to devise a plan, whether it works or not, we hope that it works,” Ncikazi said.

“But when you look at Kaizer Chiefs and you look at individuals, you are going to lose the plot.

“[Keagan] Dolly is the best player, but there are many more at Kaizer Chiefs. We have to look at them holistically as the attack.

“We will try and stop them from their strengths, adapt to whatever they are doing and try and impose our game. When we have the ball, try take care of the ball better because they can hurt you if you lose the ball carelessly, especially in areas where they want to win the ball.

“So, the plan, yes. I hope we have a good plan and that it works on matchday.”
