South coast prodigal son success

Anglers on the KZN south coast have caught both prodigal son and slinger over the past week.

North - Sodwana has been the most productive spot up north recently, with reports of yellowfin tuna and quite a few kingfish on popper too. There have been a few issues with sharks in the area, so be sure to fish with decent tackle and strong hooks to prevent tackle failure. Mustad Big Gun hooks are perfect for hook replacements on all sizes of poppers and stick baits. Cape Vidal and St Lucia have both had fairly decent fishing. The main species being targeted has been Natal snoek, which were caught on Strike Pro Magic minnows and small spoons towards the beginning of the week. Most of the fish have been smaller with the exception of one or two fish over 5kg.

Central - Umhlanga and Blue Lagoon saw a fair number of anglers targeting snoek. Smaller fish were landed in the afternoon sessions and the slightly larger fish have been caught at first light on strip baits. With the snoek being smaller, the best hook will be a 4/0 Mustad 34007ss for the ultimate hook-up. The bottom fishing off Durban has just got better and better by the day. Excellent catches of bottom fish of all sorts have been taken from all local spots off Durban, including some very nice daga salmon.

South - This stretch has produced a few prodigal son over the last week, while targeting tuna. Although these are a difficult fish to specifically target, they have been known to prefer a live mozzie down rigged in between 10m and 40m. Rattlers and other diving lures will also get a bite on a good day. The tuna that have been caught are not the largest, but there have been good numbers and the odd wahoo between them. Bottom fishing has been productive throughout the week and there has been a surprising amount of huge slinger around.
