Sharks chomping Durban geelbek
Updated | By Staff Writer
North - St Lucia has had some excellent Natal snoek fishing recently, with fish being in excess of 7kg in some cases. The bite is on fillet strips with Kingfisher pink or live glow dusters. Rough seas have made the sea difficult to fish, but as usual committed anglers have reaped the benefits. Maphelane has been much the same and has seen most anglers attempting to boat a few snoek. Blacktip kingfish have been hooked around the Lighthouse area while trawling Rattlers for snoek. Anglers around Richards Bay have had some good bottom fishing for bigger daga and also the ever so plentiful geelbek. Zinkwazi produced a number of yellowfin tuna on Rattlers and Konas as well as live bait.
Central - From Tinley Manor down to Umdloti there have been a few tuna in the deeper water, 90% of which are being caught on artificials. At this time of the year we generally start fishing lures without steel trace, as there are far less fish that can bite one off. The use of Siglon fluorocarbon will increase your chance of a bite, even more so if it is clean water being trawled in. Durban has been a bit quiet with the exception of the odd yellowfin tuna and tropical yellowtail. Both of which have been landed at Number One. Geelbek and daga have been landed in the deep, but as usual sharks have been an issue so remember to take extra traces.
South - On this stretch bottom fishing seems to be the only real productive style of angling. Very few gamefish have been landed apart from tuna. Geelbek and daga have been the main quarry and with no doubt the most productive. In the shallower water there have been excellent catches of rockcod, which are taking bigger baits such as whole mackerel.
