Shark action off Umhlanga

Several grey sharks were caught near the Umhlanga Lighthouse over the past week.

North Coast

Kosi Bay is still on a good streak for light tackle edible fishing. Smaller kingfish, cave bass as well as wave garrick are all plentiful.

Mapelane has seen some nice shad in the mornings on both bait and Kingfisher S-Bend spoons. Non-edible anglers are now waiting for the proper winter months to target the big sharks in this area.

Richards Bay harbour has seen some nice snapper salmon and a few small kob caught at night. Some blackfin sharks off the beach have given heavy tackle anglers a few decent workouts.

Zinkwazi and surrounds have seen a few grey sharks, wave garrick and smallish shad.

Central

Umhlanga Lighthouse has had a good run of grey sharks up to 10kg.

Durban beachfront has seen nice catches of pompano and some decent garrick. The guys fishing off the piers have landed some good yellowtail, as well as grunter and kingies.

Bluff is a bit quiet, while Isipingo has seen a few rare big shad. Toti and Warner Beach are producing the odd grey shark and a fair amount of small shad.

Winklespruit has reports of some good size Stone bream and Black tail on small Mustad bait holder hooks.

South Coast

Umkomaas River mouth has seen some small kob activity, as well as snapper salmon. Some grunter have also come out on sea lice or cracker shrimp baits.

Scottburgh has had the odd blackfin and plenty of smaller size shad in the morning.

Hibberdene has still got better size shad, while Trafalgar has turned on the bronze bream. These fish seem partial to pink prawn on a Mustad #6 Big Gun hook. Look for the grass like seaweed on the beach to see where they are feeding.

Margate has started to pick up with a fair amount of shad and karanteen caught.

Munster has also had good reports of bronze bream, shad and good size blacktail.

The Transkei area had good catches of hammerhead sharks, as well as some big greys. Good size shad are also up for grabs for the edible anglers.
