Rain spoils Proteas T20 World Cup opener
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Rain in Hobart thwarted the Proteas march to an opening T20
World Cup victory over Zimbabwe as the teams had to settle for a point each on
Monday.
The match had already been hit hard as constant downpours in Tasmania meant that eventually the match was reduced to nine overs per side.
Zimbabwe won the toss and chose to bat first before the rain reduced the match substantially, however the Proteas bowlers started well when the match eventually got underway.
Inside four overs the Proteas restricted Zimbabwe to 19 for four with Lungi Ngidi picking up two wickets, Dave Miller executing a precision run out and Wayne Parnell also bagging a wicket.
Wesley Madhevere, the former St Charles pupil, gave our neighbours something to bowl at with 35 not out off 18 balls with four fours and one six.

Milton Shumba added 18 to the total as Zimbabwe finished their nine overs on 79 for five.
The chase got off to a flying start as Quinton de Kock flew out the blocks blasting his way to 47 not out off just 18 balls. He hit eight fours and a six and was striking at 261 runs per 100 balls.
Rain during their innings revised the Proteas target to 64 off seven overs.
Captain Temba Bavuma was also not out on two off two balls before the rain came down again with the Proteas 51 without loss after three overs.
The players couldn’t get back onto the field and that meant that each team was awarded one point.
The Proteas will face Bangladesh in their second match of the competition on Thursday.
