Paul Roos boss at Kearsney
Updated | By Andre Bloem
The weather played its role in what turned out to be a top-class tennis event featuring some of South Africa’s leading young tennis players.
Wayne Montgomery from Paul Roos flew directly to Paris to participate in the Junior French Open – having used the Kearsney tournament as a warm-up for this international event. He is currently ranked number seven in the ITF World Junior Rankings.
Paul Roos proved once again their total dominance of schools tennis in South Africa by winning the 18th annual Invitation Festival held at Kearsney College over the weekend.
It is the 10th time in 18 years that Paul Roos from Stellenbosch have won the Festival. Their clinical domination left the remaining teams to play for second position. In February this year Paul Roos also produced a superb display of skill and strength to win their own tennis festival.
Kearsney’s three-day tournament ended on Sunday with another strong tennis outfit, Affies from Pretoria, coming second. Paul Roos managed to beat Affies by 5 matches to 1 in the Kearsney final.
The host side comprised Keegan Foss, Dale Sandy, Brad Porteous, Oliver Thomson, Matthew Bentley, Ben Patton and Lee Brown.
The young Kearsney team performed well and finished in 5th position; losing to Affies and St Stithians but beat Clifton, Selborne and Westville Boys. Grey College finished in 3rd position after a hard fought win over St Stithians.
Final positions:
1. Paul Roos, Stellenbosch
2. Affies, Pretoria
3. Grey College, Bloemfontein
4. St Stithians, Johannesburg
5. Kearsney College, Botha’s Hill
6. Westville Boys’ High, Durban
