Nematandani targets second term

South African Football Association (Safa) president Kirsten Nematandani believes he will have more success in the post if his tenure is extended to a second term.

“You are talking to the current president, who is also standing,” Nematandani said in Johannesburg earlier today. “One wants to take this legacy forward and one cannot in one term have come up with a legacy that one can look back on, but I believe the excitement is there and alive.”

Nematandani would not be drawn on whether he would be threatened by any opposition, despite recent media reports indicating Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairman Irvin Khoza would also stand.

The Safa elections will be held on September 29, and Khoza had reportedly been approached by a number of regions to run for the position.

“All we must say is everyone is free to come in and stand for whatever position they like,” Nematandani said.

If Khoza accepts his nomination he will have to resign from his position as chairman of the PSL.

Nematandani was elected unopposed as Safa president in 2009.
