More gold for Chad in Durban

The trials are taking place in Durban at the Kings Park Aquatics Centre, plenty of action unfolden last night.

KZN’s Chad Le Clos just missed out on adding the 200m freestyle to his list of Commonwealth Games qualification events, when he won the race with a time of 1:48.43, 0.01secs off the 1:48.42 requirement. The silver medal went to Myles Brown in 1:49.31 and the bronze to Dylan Bosch in 1:49.36.

Olympian Cameron van der Burgh started the competition well, finishing top of the 100m breaststroke semi-finals with a time of 1:00.98. Van der Burgh was followed by Jared Pike and Marko Visser in 1:02.40 and 1:02.67 respectively.

The Commonwealth Games qualification time of 1:00.86 will be hotly contested when the final of the event is raced tomorrow.

In the 100m freestyle semi-finals, Karin Prinsloo was fastest, clocking 55.19, while Erin Gallagher and Trudi Maree were close behind her in 56.88 and 56.89.

In her final event of the night, the 100m backstroke semi-finals, Prinsloo once again finished in first position, touching the wall in 1:01.58 ahead of Jessica Ashley-Cooper (1:02.04) and Nathania van Niekerk (1:03.45).

Prinsloo will be out for fast Commonwealth Qualification times tomorrow, when she swims in both the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke finals.

In the multi-disability 100m breaststroke S1-13, 15 year-old Alani Ferreira came very close to the Commonwealth Games qualification time of 1:27.00 when she won her race in 1:33.81 ahead of Tenza Abrahams (1:41.05) and Dimakatso Makgakga (1:48.47).

The day 03 heats begin at 09h30 while the finals will start at 18h00 daily.
