Updated | By Nick Tatham
After months of speculation, the South African Football
Association has announced former Bafana Bafana wing Helman Mkhalele as the
national men’s team’s second assistant coach.
Mkhalele, known as the ‘Midnight Express’ during his playing days, was capped 66 times for the national team and is currently the coach of the South African Under 20 side.
He played a part in Bafana Bafana’s famous 1996 African Cup of Nations triumph and scored eight goals for the national side.
He joins the technical team under head coach Hugo Broos and will work alongside Chedomir Janevski with Bafana who are preparing for an arranged friendly against Uganda in June.
Following their showdown with the Cranes they will then focus on the FIFA World Cup qualifiers where they will come up against Uganda again, Zimbabwe and Ethiopia hoping to qualify for the global showpiece in Qatar next year.
The announcement of the position of local assistant coach has come under immense scrutiny and speculation with former head coach Molefi Ntseki and current under 23 coach David Notoane both being pipped for the role.
On Friday, SAFA also confirmed that former Banyana Banyana player and manager Lydia Manypao will fill the vacant Chief Operations Officer position.
