Michaelhouse and Westville still unbeaten in PMB
Updated | By Staff Writer
The four sides that continued to stand out on day three of Oppenheimer Week, hosted as always by Maritzburg College in the KZN capital, were Affies, KES, Michaelhouse and Westville, who kept up their 100% win records.
Coach Alan Norton’s impressive Durban High School lads saw their two-match winning streak come unstuck when they went down by five wickets to the lads from St Johns in Johannesburg at that outstanding pitch curator Dave Evans’ splendid Varsity Oval.
Affies, the most experienced side at Oppenheimer Week in respect of the number of appearances by their players at this celebrated festival of schoolboy cricket, continued to plunder all before them - and after back-to-back eight-wicket wins, they proceeded to outplay Maritzburg College by 76 runs Monday on the hallowed turf of Goldstones that is looked after with such care by groundsman Dave Veitch and his worthy staff.
KES have conquered all before them and this time it was Hilton who felt the sharpness of King Edward’s blade, while KZN schools Michaelhouse and Westville continued their winning ways with crushing victories over St Stithians, and St Davids respectively.
Tuesday’s final round of matches will be played according to formats agreed to by the respective coaches of opposing teams. Some have opted to play T20 matches, others 35-over affairs or 50-over clashes.
One to look forward to in particular will be the Westville versus Affies dust-up at Varsity Oval. T20, 35-over or 50-over, it doesn’t really matter – this one shows all the signs of becoming a classic clash in keeping with the history of this magnificent festival that had its birth way back in 1959.
