McCarthy announced as new AmaZulu manager
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Following the recent
resignation of Ayanda Dlamini as manager of AmaZulu, the club have swiftly
appointed former Bafana Bafana star Benni McCarthy as their new head coach for
an undisclosed tenure at the helm of Usuthu.
McCarthy most
recently coached Cape Town City but has been out of a job for a period of time,
however it’s been a busy week for Sandile Zungu and his team as they tried to lock
in McCarthy to a deal.
Chairman of the club Zungu is excited to see what McCarthy can do at the club with the correct backing and the best possible infrastructure and players at his disposal.
“We are trying to build a future here at AmaZulu together,” Zungu said. “Benni wants to win all the time and so do we so we will be playing to win.
“It’s not a secret that we want to be the top brand in soccer going forward. There are great brands in soccer in South Africa and we want to be among them.
“We definitely want to finish in the top four; we’ve got the players, the technical support and now the head coach and we want to be the best soccer brand in this country come our centenary which is in twelve years’ time.”
McCarthy is a manager that has gained a lot of experience at the top level of football in South Africa and this job is going to provide the opportunity for him to take that next step in his career. He does feel that it’s a good chance to prove his worth.
“I see a lot of potential here,” McCarthy said. “The signing and the changes that the chairman has made means that the attention is there, and they want to compete.
“They want to be at the top and not make up the numbers.
“Everything is in place here and my job is to get to know everyone and try and get the players on board with the mission on what is expected and what the club wants.
“The chairman wants top four but my ambition is far greater than that!”
