Maritzburg pummeling for Dolphins
Updated | By Michael Owen-Smith
Rassie van der Dussen completed his first Sunfoil Series ton of the season as the bizhub Highveld Lions compiled an imposing 317 for three at the close of play on the first day of their match against the Sunfoil Dolphins at the Pietermaritzburg Oval on Friday.
Van der Dussen was in fine form as he made 135 (229 balls, 16 fours, 1 six).
Stephen Cook hit 70 (125 balls, 11 fours) and Dominic Hendricks 69 not out to add to the Dolphins’ misery with a pair of half-centuries after the Lions had won the toss and elected to bat.
Van der Dussen and Cook put the bowlers to the sword during the morning session as they compiled an impressive opening stand of 151 at more than four runs to the over.
Captain Cook was dismissed by left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj after lunch, but Hendricks and Van der Dussen continued to pile on the runs as they added 94 runs for the second wicket.
Van der Dussen’s impressive innings was finally ended by Maharaj, but Hendricks and Alviro Petersen (29) then put on a third-wicket partnership of 72.
Petersen was eventually trapped LBW by Maharaj with the last ball of the day.
The Dolphins spinner was by far the pick of the bowlers as he ended the day with figures of 3/91 and he was the only bowler, of the six used, to concede less than three runs to the over.
