Maharaj to lead Durban's Super Giants in SA20
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Durban's Super Giants (DSG) recently announced that Proteas
and Hollywoodbets Dolphins spinner Keshav Maharaj will captain the team for the
second edition of the SA20.
Maharaj, who played a key role in the side's efforts in the inaugural edition of the competition, will take over from wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock, who will continue to play a pivotal role in the side.
A Durban boy through and through, Maharaj has already achieved great success with the local franchise Hollywoodbets Dolphins after guiding them to victory in the 2019/20 Momentum Cup. Having captained the national side in ODIs as well, Maharaj brings with him a wealth of experience.
“I am humbled and privileged to accept the opportunity to captain the DSG franchise in the next SA20 league," Maharaj said. "Durban has been my home for 18 years and I hope that I can draw on my domestic experience from a leadership and player’s perspective."
It will be a big task for Maharaj to take over from De Kock who is hugely experienced, but Maharaj wants De Kock to remain a big part of the team's leadership.
“I’d like to thank Quinny for all his hard work, on and off the field. He’s still a leader in the team and his experience and knowledge of the game is invaluable to our unit. He has an integral part to play for us if we are to bring the trophy home."
For DSG owner, Dr. Sanjiv Goenka, it was an easy decision to give Maharaj the captaincy.
“Keshav is a natural leader and has achieved phenomenal success as captain in South African domestic cricket already," Dr. Goenka said. "He is also an integral part of the leadership group for the national team and was hence a natural choice for us as DSG captain going forward.
"Quinton will continue to be a key player and leader for our franchise, and I'm excited to see the group work together to bring the trophy to Durban in 2024.”
