Leicester legend Morgan to retire
Updated | By Nick Tatham
After guiding Leicester City to a historic Premier League
title, Foxes captain Wes Morgan will retire at the end of the season.
Morgan led his side to the most unlikely of league triumphs in the 2015/16 season and followed that up with a substitute appearance in their 1-0 FA Cup triumph over Chelsea recently – a first triumph in England’s premier knock-out competition.
The 37-year-old defender made 324 appearances for the Foxes in a career that has spanned nearly ten seasons and leaves behind a legacy that club chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha believes will help the club continue to get better.
"Wes has been one of Leicester City’s greatest servants, leading the team through the club’s most successful era and helping to set the standards that have pushed the club forward," he said via AFP.
"A big brother to everyone he has played with, a strong representative of the squad and a valuable source of counsel to managers and senior executives in the club, his contribution has been enormous."
For Morgan doing a job for the Leicester City supporters was one of the most satisfying elements to his time in the East Midlands.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s a fantastic club, we’ve got great owners, we’ve got great management and we’ve got great players, so the future is very bright,” he said in a statement on the Leicester City website.
“It’s been fantastic playing for the Foxes fans.
“I’ve had such a good time here. To come to Leicester has been one of my best choices. I can always look back on the memories. We’ve had some great times together.
“The fans have always been good to me. I always played my heart out for them.”
Another member of that title winning side and another player that has left an important mark on the King Power Stadium is Christian Fuchs.
The Austrian defender is another player that will be leaving Leicester at the end of the season.
Under Brendan Rodgers the side have become top four contenders and this weekend they face Tottenham Hotspur in their final game of the season.
A win against Spurs will guarantee them European football next season as they will finish inside the top four, an achievement they haven’t mustered since winning the league five seasons ago.
