Lambie continues as Sharks skipper
Updated | By Gareth Jenkinson
Springbok and Cell C Sharks flyhalf Pat Lambie will captain the Durban outfit in the 2017 Super Rugby competition.
The 26-year-old retains the captain's armband for another
season, receiving the backing of new coach Rob du Preez just a month away from
the start of the Southern hemisphere tournament.
The announcement wasn't surprising given that Lambie skippered the team last year and he has plenty of support from a number of senior players in the squad.
The likes of Keegan Daniel, Philip Van der Walt, Odwa Ndungane, Beast Mtawarira and Lwazi Mvovo will help nurture a squad brimming with youth, while Lambie's calm and collected nature should help steady the ship.
Coach Du Preez admitted that Lambie was once again the obvious choice as captain this year.
“Pat’s talent, temperament and outstanding character makes him an automatic choice. He’s a natural leader, who provides great inspiration and motivation for our young players and he has all the qualities needed to be a great captain," Du Preez said.
“He has supported this team all his life and understands our unique culture, which has been built on the emphasis of a strong work ethic. Pat puts in the hard yards, leads by example and he has the respect and backing of everyone around him.”
Meanwhile Lambie, humble as ever, accepted the role and all it encompasses.
“It is a huge honour for me to again captain the Cell C Sharks. I would like to thank our management for affording me the honour of leading a relatively young, but exciting and talented team," Lambie said.
“With honour comes responsibility and together with the other leaders in the team, we will provide guidance and support to our young players. There is an exciting vision that we are working towards, that has been built on our core values, and we look forward to the support of our community, who are instrumental to our success.”
The Sharks open their Super Rugby campaign with a clash against the Reds in Brisbane on Friday, February 24.
