La Lucia tennis initiative
Updated | By Andre Bloem
The La Lucia Tennis Club situated at the La Lucia Mall near the car park area is embarking on a new venture.
The club has a new partner in top tennis coach Rowena Sanders. She was an accomplished player on the international circuit and played at the US Open, French Open and Wimbledon. Sanders was once ranked 42 in the world. She coached the SA women’s Fed Cup team for several years as well as many top SA juniors. She is the owner of the Pro Tennis Academy.
The new business will be named Tennis 4 U.
Rowena and her assistants have a new vision for the club.
Her aim is to promote tennis in the community and to provide a fun venue for social events and tournaments. Her projected vision includes:
• the introduction of the International Tennis Federation’s new tennis coaching programme for kids and adults called “Play and Stay." This ITF programme makes use of special coloured red, orange and green soft balls and mini nets which will help players of all ages to serve, rally and score faster. The slower balls make the sport much easier for starter players who will have more time and more control. The game becomes more fun at the introductory stage.
• early morning coaching sessions for business executives and school kids before work or before school.
• fun Mom’s Mornings for the mom’s who have just dropped their kids off at school.
• afternoon coaching for all players irrespective of their age and ability, private and group lessons.
• specialised squad sessions for top players early morning and afternoon.
• Saturday morning red, orange and green ball club and tournaments/competitions.
• the erection of floodlights in the near future for corporate, team building and adult events.
• tennis birthday parties.
• Corporate team building functions.
• The introduction of a well supervised Kids Zone where kids can play when mom is playing tennis or shopping in the mall.
Various fun events will be held during the school holidays to launch Tennis 4 U. These are:
• 10 and under tournament from 28-29 June 2013 sponsored by the Oyster Box Hotel on 28/29 June. Age is calculated as at 1st January.
• 12 and under tournament from 26-27 June 2013 sponsored by the Oyster Box Hotel on 28/29 June. Age calculated as at 1st January.
• “Play and Stay” fun day for all red, orange and soft green ball players on 24-25 June.
• Free adult assessment and play on 24-25 June.
