King mackerel action off Durban

The latest Kingfisher Report says anglers off Durban have been landing tuna, dorado and king mackerel.

North – The water north has been green due to all the rain from the past week. The Zululand coast has produced a few couta between 8 and 20kgs - most of these fish have been caught on dead baits such as walla-walla, mackerel and bonito. Umdloti has seen frantic yellowfin tuna action over the past month or so. Sharks here have been more than a problem - so wind in fast to avoid your fish being eaten. Lures such as Kingfisher Rattlers and Halcos between 9 and 15cms in red and white, green, pink and purple have worked particularly well.

Central – The Barge and No 1 have produced some good Tuna catches, while the Umgeni upwards stretch saw the odd dorado deeper out with some couta also making an appearance. Anglers have used poppers as well as the Halco Skimstik in order to catch fish in and around bait balls. The night hawks have caught the odd daga and geelbek - although it is becoming costly due to the number of sharks. Baits working really well for dorado over the last week have been live baits or feathers and konas in pink and white, green, and black and purple.

South – There have been some good dorado here in the deeper water at 24ºC. Amongst these fish there have also been a few sailies and wahoo. Skippers have also had good catches of yellowfin tuna ranging from 5 kilos right the way up to nearly 30.

Durban Bay – Some good catches of big grunter especially in the deep waters or near the BAT Centre. These fish have been caught on sardine belly as well as cracker shrimp. The centre bank area seems to have a lot of skates. From the side there are still some smaller kingfish on spoon and top water lures and towards the end of January we should see a lot more top water action.
