CRICKET

Kearsney 1st X1 beat DHS 1st X1 by 7 wickets at Kearsney.

DHS won the toss and decided to bat on a belter of a track.  Injudicious shot-selection, as well as good fielding and bowling from the Kearsney side, saw DHS bundled out for a modest 134. Caneham was the pick of the batsmen with 31.

With a major storm approaching, Kearsney chased down the target with some aggressive batting in 26 overs. Keegan Foss 61 and Ryan Wallace 40 not out put the DHS bowlers to the sword and ensured victory for the hosts.

The game was played in commendable spirit as one would expect from two traditional rivals.

DHS 134 all out

Kearsney 136/3 (Foss 61, Wallace 40 no)

Kearsney won by 7 wickets

Kearsney 1st XI also had a successful week by making it through to the next round of the national T20 Challenge - having won all three of their matches in the initial pool stages.

BASKETBALL

Kearsney 50 DHS 49

Kearsney basketball made history by beating perennial basketball power-house, DHS, on Saturday for the first time in the school’s history.

In what was a closely contested game with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions, neither side was able to pull away in the first two quarters.  In the first quarter Kearsney lead 14–12 and in the second quarter Kearsney was able to extend their lead to four points. Both teams played good defence and limited the opposition’s shots during the first half.

In the third quarter Kearsney managed to get a ten-point lead, only to see it evaporate as they allowed DHS to close the gap with some quick transition baskets on the fast break. The quarter ended with DHS trailing by two points 35–37.  It would come down to which team held their nerve.

DHS quickly pulled away in the fourth quarter, but with the clock winding down Kearsney stole the ball twice and made a crucial free throw to give themselves a chance of winning the game.

With one second left on the clock, Kearsney scored a 3-pointer that gave them their first victory over DHS.

Kearsney’s first team was not the school’s only success story as the U14A, U15A and U16A teams also recorded their first wins over the basketball power-house.
