Kalmer too good in Maritzburg

Rene Kalmer won the Pietermaritzburg Spar Ladies race in a time of 34 minutes and 13 seconds yesterday.

Kalmer ended over 300 metres clear of Nolene Conrad in second spot.

Phatane’s Sithulisiwe Zhou ended in third in a time of 36 minutes and 16 seconds.

Kalmer, in the colours of Modern Athlete, had been struggling to find form in recent months, but make short work of the challenging city centre and Alexander Park course.  

Tanith Maxwell, Kalmer’s Olympic marathon teammate, was fourth and first in the 35-39 category, with Suzette Botha impressing with her ninth place overall and winner of the 40-49 group in 38:36.

Over 4 200 runners took part in the either the 10km or 5km events which finished at the Oval in Alexander Park in the City of Choice. 

Entries are open for the next leg of the Spar Ladies Challenge which will be held in Durban on 24 August.

The event is expected to attract over 15 000 runners and walkers in 5km or 10km distances.
 
Joseph Munyawaki and Bonginkosi Zwane of the Phantane club diced to the line in the fifth cross-country league held at Stainbank Nature Reserve on Saturday, with only the line judge able to separate the pair who were both given the time of 38 minutes 55 seconds.

Wiseman Fadane of Boxer was third in 39:27 for the 12km course.
 
Fikile Mbuthuma from Nedbank was unchallenged in the ladies 8km in 33:03, with Xoli Madida from Carbineers second and Daneil Feldman third.

The cross-country league continues to grow with over 750 runners now competing in the 2014 league, which has its championships on 16 August in Amanzintoti.
