Injured Nortje released from Proteas squad

South African quick bowler Anrich Nortje has been released by the Proteas coaching staff after picking up an injury in the first test against the West Indies.

The tear-away quick was one of the pick of the Proteas bowlers in their 87 run win over the Windies in the opener at SuperSport Park as he finished the match with six wickets which included figures of five for 36 in the first innings.

According to Cricket South Africa it is a precautionary measure resting Nortje as the Proteas and the West Indies will still face off in three ODI’s and three T20’s after the second test starting at the Wanderers on 8 March.

In a statement CSA announced the reasoning for resting the paceman.

“The 29-year-old experienced mild groin discomfort during the first Test at SuperSport Park in Centurion, and as a precaution, has been asked to rest following an assessment by South Africa's medical team,” the statement said.

“A replacement has not been named.”

The Proteas will also bid farewell to bowling coach Charl Langeveldt who will not be with the squad for the second test.”

“Bowling coach Charl Langeveldt has also been released from the squad due to family reasons, with the first Test subsequently his last as bowling coach.”

Langeveldt will be replaced as bowling coach by former Warriors coach Piet Botha.
