Ho looks to extend Midmar legacy
Six-time Aquelle Midmar Mile men’s champion Chad Ho is aiming for another win this weekend to extend his record number of wins in the world’s largest open water swimming race.
Speaking to East Coast Radio Sportswave earlier this week, the 25-year-old open water swimmer said he was just as keen to continue his winning record as when he first started competing in the event.
“Just winning one was a great honour so I am just trying to extend that record and maybe try and cement a legacy for myself in this race. To get that seventh one will be a huge relief and success,” Ho said.
The current five-kilometre open water world champion has had some epic races in the Midmar dam and he expects another tough field this weekend.
“Each year the field is competitive no matter who is or isn’t swimming. Last year was competitive even though there were a few guys missing. This year I know Matthew Meyer is going to be up there challenge. He’s my training partner and he’s been swimming really quickly in the pool,” Ho said.
With so much experience in open water conditions, Ho believes that the race is always decided on the day.
“Open water is anyone’s game. It’s about the line you take, the conditions – anything can happen. We all have to wait and see until Sunday. I’m looking forward to it and I’m sure my competitive side will definitely come out.”
