Hendrikse called up to Blitzbok squad
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Lions flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse has been called up to the
Springbok sevens squad for the upcoming HSBC London Sevens this weekend.
The Blitzbokke once again couldn't put a string of performances together in Toulouse which saw them finish outside of the top ten for the first time since 2013.
Hendrikse is one of three changes to the squad with Angelo Davids and Sako Makata the other two players that will come into the squad for the crucial weekend in London.
It might seem that Hendrikse is a bit of a left-field pick, however coach Neil Powell doesn't have many other genuine sevens options.
“We are really thin on the ground with flyhalves, with Justin Geduld, Selvyn Davids and Lubabalo Dobela unavailable and we are grateful to the Emirates Lions for releasing him,” said Powell.
He's excited to have Davids and Makata back in the mix after Makata was sidelined with a rib injury since April. Davids on the other hand hasn't been a part of the Blitzbokke set-up since the Vancouver Sevens in 2021 but was set to return ahead of a busy second half of the year.
“Sako also just missed out on travelling to France, while Angelo was due to return to the Blitzboks before the Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup Sevens.”
The Blitzbokke are now in second place on the overall series standings behind Argentina. They will face the South Americans, Ireland and Kenya in their group this week.
