Glenwood hosted Maritzburg College on Saturday 3 August at the 3 schools Astro. After losing narrowly up at College and enjoying a recent run of good form, the 1st XI were quietly confident that they could record the victory against College Hockey at first team level that had so far eluded them for a decade.

Glenwood were quick out the blocks, mounting an attack from the whistle down their right hand side which saw Tanner Bottomley linking with Dayne Naidoo who drew their keeper out of position before slipping the ball across to Andile Phehlukwayo who, unfortunately, was unable to convert.

3 minutes later, it was the same pairing of Naidoo and Phehlukwayo who who gave Glenwood the lead when Naidoo crossed from within the “D” to Phehlukwayo who guided the ball past the College keeper.

Glenwood dominated the first half but were unable to extend their lead before the break.

College responded well in the second half and increased the tempo of the game significantly.

Glenwood keeper, Michael Labuschagne, was called into action several times and managed to keep the College strikers at length.

Glenwood, themselves, missed a number of opportunities to further their lead. James Dellis and Keegan Hezlett worked tirelessly in the links, showing their skill and determination whilst Callan Pearce, Matthew Madsen and Jason Reed were resolute in defence, giving the College strikers very little to work with.

As expected, the boys from Maritzburg never dropped their heads or stopped trying and credit must be given for their attitude and commitment.

When the final whistle blew, Glenwood had finally broken a decade drought at first team level and deservedly took the spoils, 1-0.

Next week will see the boys in green travel to Grey Bloem for their last outdoor fixture. We wish all teams the very best.
