Good fishing at Blue Lagoon
Updated | By Staff Writer
Kosi Bay/Mapelane: Most of our north coast anglers had fun with sharks and flat fish. Sand sharks and blackfin sharks are at the top of the list, mostly caught on the slide and the odd sandy on throw baits. Mapelane and surrounding areas have seen good catches of larger edibles such as stumpnose and pompano.
The perfect bait for these flat fish would be a juicy bloody bait such as a double cutlet of shad or mackerel, a whole red eye turned inside-out or even a shad head. The bloodier the better. One can even dip the bait in "Kingfisher Anchovy Mix" to add a nice oily, bloody finish to ordinary chokka baits or prawn baits. This trick works extremely well in conditions that don't allow for good visibility, such as dirty water and fishing at night. For even better results, add glass rattles to your baits, this works extremely well for species such as kob and brusher.
Richards Bay: At this time of year Richards Bay generally fishes very well, but up until last week we had not experienced what is expected of this beautiful fishing ground. This all changed overnight with excellent catches. Blackfin sharks, sand sharks, brown rays, daimond rays, honeycomb rays and many edibles were on the menu in recent days and the locals took full advantage of this.
In these fishing conditions it is difficult to target a specific species of fish, due to the fact that most of the fish in the area being fished are opportunists and will eat almost anything that presents itself. Stumpies will take chokka baits that are intended for sand sharks and sea lice that are intended for stumpies may be eaten by pompano. This is what makes fishing in this area so interesting - one never knows what is going to be caught.
Zinkwazi: Fishing in this area is heating up by the day, with many catches of edibles and inedibles from not only the sea side, but also the lagoon. This is a great area to target kingfish and springer on fly and small artificials.
Umdloti/Umhlanga: One thing is for sure, Umhlanga has not seen fishing this good in months. Countless sand sharks of all sizes on throw baits and slide baits. Diamond rays, brown rays, grey sharks, blackfin sharks, stumpies and a handful of kob! Lighthouse has been fishing incredibly well, but to avoid crowds don't be scared to venture further south. This has produced a bigger fish on many occasions. Umdloti has produced some fine sharks, but seems to be a bit on the quieter side for edibles. The odd bonefish and stumpie are being landed.
Blue Lagoon/Durban Beachfront: Some excellent fishing here recently. The Durban basin has been producing the goods in terms of flat fish, grey sharks and sand sharks, as well as some excellent edibles including stumpies and bonefish. The North bank spinning crowd, who can be seen on the north banks of the Umgeni river in the mornings, have been having tons of fun throwing spoons, dropshot and diving baits for some kingfish, shad, snoek and kob.
