The French Tennis Federation (FFT) also said that up to 10,000 people would be able to watch the finals.

In a official statement on their website the organisers have said that they will act closely with all authorities to make sure spectators, officials and players are safe.

"The French Tennis Federation – which is acting responsibly and in close collaboration with the French government authorities, while benefitting from the advice of a committee of multi-disciplinary experts – is adapting and will continue to adapt to the situation caused by the COVID-19 crisis," the statement said. "It has prepared a protocol that aims to protect spectators attending this historic edition of Roland-Garros.

"The number of spectators allowed inside the stadium will be 50% to 60% of its usual capacity, allowing us to ensure the barrier measures are respected."

Before the worldwide implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Grand Slam at Roland Garros was supposed to get underway on 24 May.

This year will be the 124th edition of the Parisian classic with the tournaments most decorated winner Rafael Nadal and Australian Ashleigh Barty set to defend their titles won in 2019.

The clay-court Grand Slam event is set to start on September 27 and finish on October 11.
