Injury problems have forced former Sharks and Springbok flank Jean Deysel to announce his retirement from rugby after a lengthy career both locally and abroad.

According to Ulster, Deysel has been struggling with couple of lower body injuries which has led the 33-year-old to call time on his career with immediate effect. He joined the Irish side last year from Munster and managed to feature in three Pro 14 games this season.

This brings down the curtain on a 15 year career that saw Deysel have stints with the Lions, Sharks, Toyota Verblitz in Japan as well as Munster and Ulster. He also earned four Springbok caps during his time on the field.

The burly flank became somewhat of a crowd favourite at Kings Park for his hard hits and bulldozing runs during his time at the Sharks. He moved to Durban from the Lions in Johannesburg in 2007 and became a regular in the Super Rugby and Currie Cup teams.

In 2014, he signed a two year contract with Japanese outfit Toyota Verblitz and played for the club in between Super Rugby seasons. In 2017, Deysel bid farewell to the Sharks and joined Munster on loan for a year, before moving to Ulster which would be his final move before ending his career.
