Fabulous Faf downs Super Giants
Updated | By Nick Tatham
Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis registered the first ever
Betway SA20 century as his side beat Durban’s Super Giants by eight wickets at
the Wanderers on Tuesday night.
Du Plessis was at his imperious best as he outscored the
rest of the Super Kings batters to finish their chase on 113 not out off just
58 deliveries. His innings included eight sixes and eight fours as he guided
his team home with five balls to spare.
The Super Giants were put into bat first by the home side and they had Kyle
Mayers to thank for their fast start at the West Indian star blasted 28 off 15
balls to see the Super Giants past 30 in the first three overs.
Captain Quinton de Kock fell for six in the fourth over before Mayers was
caught and Wiaan Mulder bowled in the next over which left the Super Giants at
46 for three inside the powerplay.
A partnership was then established between Matthew Breetzke
and the in-form Heinrich Klaasen as the pair put together a crucial 75 for the
fourth wicket with young Breetzke contributing 28 to the total.
Keemo Paul scored eight which included a maximum before he became the fifth
Super Giants wicket to fall with the total on 132 at the end of 16 overs.
A flurry from Jason Holder at the death saw the Super Giants post a competitive
178 for six as Holder ended on 28 not out off 12 balls while Klaasen again held
the innings together with 65 off 48 balls.
The reply from the home side saw Du Plessis take charge as the opening
partnership ended on 157 of which Reeza Hendricks made 45. This highlighted the
dominance shown by Du Plessis throughout the chase.
Donovan Ferreira contributed four while Leus du Plooy ended on six not out as
the Super Kings did the double over the Super Giants after winning their
encounter in Durban on the second day of the competition.
Reece Topley and Wiaan Mulder were the two bowlers to pick up a wicket for the
Super Giants as Topley finished with figures of one for 19 in his four overs.
Durban’s Super Giants have two home matches in a row coming up at Kingsmead
Stadium when they face MI Cape Town on Thursday, 2 February and then the
Sunrisers Eastern Cape on Friday, 3 February before their final group match
against the Pretoria Capitals at Centurion on Sunday, 5 February.
