Durban spearo lands huge tuna

Durban spear-fisherman, Paul Shannon, recently shot and landed a monster tuna. He now tells us his story...

"I recently travelled to Ascension Island, a remote volcanic island in the mid Atlantic, just south of the equator. A lot of planning went into this trip as we were targeting big fish and special equipment was needed to land these massive tuna.

The flights are via the United Kingdom and the last leg is from Brize Norton to Ascension. Brize Norton is a military base and so MI clearance was necessary.

Ascension is an island with 800 inhabitants mostly from St. Helena and some British and American soldiers who man the military bases there.  There were fish being landed every day by the 2 or 3 boats operating from the small port. Our target was a tuna of over 100kg.

After three days of free diving and a few fish of up to 83kg, I struck gold. I managed a perfect shot and fought the fish hard for 35 minutes, before being able to subdue it and load it onto the small boat we were using.

We knew this was a monster of 120 kg plus, but I was really elated when it weighed in at 147.3kg - a new island record.

The fillets from the fish went to feed a lot of people at a party, which was held in memory of the island's doctor who recently died.

The doctor was a South African who had died in a glider accident in June in South Africa."
