Chiefs six clear again

Chiefs scored two goals in the final four minutes of the encounter to seal the win.

AmaKhosi might have easily scored half-a-dozen times earlier, such was their domination over a team that looked over-awed and out of their depth, before Zimbabwean international Knowledge Musona made amends for earlier misses with two superb strikes.

In the first instance, Musona used his pace to leave the Ajax defenders stranded and open the score with a precise shot into the corner of the net in the 86th minute.

Then only a matter of four minutes later, the elusive Zimbabwean sealed the issue with a header of equally clinically control.

Such was the combination of Musona's relief and joy that an over-exuberant celebration resulted in him being yellow-carded.

"We missed a handful of chances," said Musona afterwards. "And I was probably the worst defender. What a relief when I finally got the ball into the net."

The win enabled Chiefs to maintain their six-point advantage at the top of the log.

A nervy Ajax looked vulnerable from the outset and made it clear as early as the opening half that their ambitions went no further than securing a draw.

It was not superb defending that maintained the stalemate as the Cape Town side led a charmed life.

In one 10-minute spell from the 60th to 70th minutes, Chiefs might actually have scored five times as the ball somehow or other remained out of the net.

One save by Ajax's Finnish international goalkeeper, Anssi Jaakkola, from a Siphiwe Tshabalala piledriver was breathtaking and out of the top drawer.

Then another superb strike from the Bafana Bafana midfielder from 30 metres thundered against the crossbar.

Kingston Nkhatha did get the ball into the net with a determined close-range effort during this frenetic period, but the goal was disallowed for an earlier deliberate handball by Tefu Mashamaite, who was also prevented from scoring by another superb save from Jaakkola.

Ironically, despite the Chiefs' siege on their goal, Ajax missed a golden opportunity of snatching a potentially match-winning goal of their own in the 76th minute when substitute Eleazar Rodgers miscued his shot with only the goalkeeper to beat from 10 metres.

The draw they craved would have been crucial in Ajax's bid to secure a significant top eight place on the log, but they are now pegged back in 10th place after playing one game more than their closest rivals.
