Chiefs join Sundowns at the summit

Kaizer Chiefs drew level with Premiership leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who maintained a narrow advantage on goal difference, with a 1-0 win over University of Pretoria at FNB Stadium last night.

Amakhosi coach Stuart Baxter was disappointed, however, after his team failed to capitalise on an early strike from Knowledge Musona.

"In the second half we didn't turn up," Baxter said. "In the first half I think we played some marvelous football and the only thing I wanted at half-time was more composure so we turned that domination into goals, but we came out in the second half and it was a mixture of poor concentration and poor discipline.

"We ended up getting very annoyed with ourselves and making mistakes." Musona found the back of the net with only the keeper to beat in the sixth minute, and while Amakhosi dominated the rest of the game, they were stunted by the Tuks defence and their own wayward attempts.

Musona had another chance shortly after the half-hour mark but was unable to connect with a pinpoint cross from Siboniso Gaxa, and Siphiwe Tshabalala's effort from the edge of the area in first-half injury time drew a routine save from Tuks goalminder Washington Arubi.

Desperate to save a point, the visitors had a couple of chances in the second half but were denied by overly ambitious attempts from Geoffrey Masa.

After firing a long-range shot well over the crossbar shortly after the interval, Masa was again off target on the hour mark when he blasted over from just outside the area.

Bernard Parker had an opportunity for the home side with 15 minutes left but his close-range strike was held by Arubi.

Chiefs keeper Itumeleng Khune was finally called to action in the 79th minute when he saved an attempt by Mpho Maruping.

The Amakhosi skipper was hardly troubled by the effort, however, as the hosts held on for their fourth straight league victory, while the visitors remained entrenched in the bottom half of the table.
