Brusher action on the Bluff
Updated | By Staff Writer
Bluff and Umkomaas - All areas between the Bluff and Umkomaas have fished well, particularly for garrick and brusher. Smaller rock species have been more plentiful recently and most anglers have managed to put their youngsters onto a decent amount of fish in the gullies. Umkomaas has seen a few half kob and snapper salmon around the mouth, as well as good numbers of flatfish in the evenings. For best results, make sure to use bloody baits such as red-eye or mackerel cutlets.
Scottburgh Point - This area has produced the goods too, with a number of larger sandsharks and eagle rays which have been targeted heavily using red-eye and chokka baits. Both of these species have been on the bite in the strong easterly winds and feed in the working water.
Port Shepstone - This area is making a name for itself with its excellent garrick catches of late. Sandspit has been the number one competitor for garrick and the last week was an example of how excellent the fishing can be in that area. Most fish were landed on live baits, with the odd exception of a catch on plug, spoon or McArthy Paddletail. There have been far less reports of kob in the area, but as a replacement, the bronze bream have been on the loose and red prawn baits seem to be getting better bites.
Port St John's - This has been a kob hotspot recently, which is the reason for the high volume of anglers. Despite the crowds on certain days, the pressure has not affected the catch rate. A few small grey sharks have been around for the inedible anglers, and Hole In The Wall has seen a number of bronze whalers, big greys and also blackfin sharks.
Just a reminder that Durban Ski Boat Club will be hosting a jet-ski fishing competition next weekend.
