Broos not in SA for retirement package
Newly appointed head coach of Bafana Bafana Hugo Broos has
insisted that he has taken the job to make the side as strong as he possibly
can as they head into their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers starting in
September.
Broos was announced as the new coach last week following weeks of speculation as to who was going to take over the toughest job in South Africa. The appointment came as a slight surprise to many but the former Cameroon coach has a proven track record.
The 62 year-old Belgian led Cameroon to the African Cup of Nations title in 2017 and is confident that he can get the best out of the players in South Africa.
“I know that this country (South Africa) is looking forward to success and I know that the people will be criticizing me but I am not afraid of that,” Broos said in a media conference on Wednesday.
“(Criticism) is the job of a coach and I have experience with that; I am not coming here to get a retirement cheque and then go back to my country with no success.
“I’m not like that,” he stressed. “If you look at my CV there is plenty of success as a coach because I want success and I want to win.”
Broos confirmed that he will have one assistant coach of his choosing and that is Čedomir Janevski while his South African assistant coach has not been finalised as yet.
"My Belgian assistant will be Cedomir Janevski – he is not here at the moment, he is still in Cyprus, where he will be in the cup final next week.
"He's from Macedonia but was staying for 35 years in Belgium, played in Belgium at Club Brugge, and he talks English, French and Dutch so there will be no problems for language or experience."
When talking about his technical team, Broos insists that they will be heavily involved in the running of the national side as they prepare for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
“I have to build a team around me. A team that is moving in the same direction and knows that the national team is the most important thing.
“We have to create a strong team, from technical to medical and we
have to make a successful team going into the next few months and years.
“The accent is on coach and not assistant and I won’t be conducting too much
training because I think the most important thing at training is observing so
they (assistant coaches) will have to work.
“I know that if we work hard, if everyone works hard, there will be success.”
Broos and his technical team will have until September to build a squad for their first FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
