BCCI move T20 World Cup to UAE
Updated | By Nick Tatham
As Covid-19 continues to ravage India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided to move the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup
from India to the UAE.
India has become the epicentre of coronavirus infections around the world as the highly contagious delta variant continues to spread through the country with the healthcare system taking severe strain.
They have recently been able to ease some restrictions however with travel restrictions still firmly in place organisers have decided to move the competition.
The UAE has become a hub for franchise-based T20 tournaments with the Indian Premier League taking place there in 2020 while this year's Pakistan Super League finished there recently and the suspended 2021 IPL set to conclude in the Middle East later this year.
"We have told the ICC about the decision to shift the World Cup to UAE. We were left with no option as the Covid situation is not clear and the travel restrictions remain," the BCCI's treasurer, Arun Dhumal, said to AFP.
"The dates will more or less be the same and we will work out the details soon."
The matches will take place at three venues in the UAE in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.
This year's T20 World Cup is set to take place from 17 October to 14 November while the IPL will use the same UAE base to concluded their competition from September to October.
