Ballito surfing celebration

The Mr Price Pro Ballito Beach Festival will be hosting Shaping Through The Ages at the La Montagne Hotel in Ballito from 2 to 4 July. The event will celebrate South Africa’s rich surfing history.

Shaping Through The Ages will offer a window into the lives of SA’s top shapers. They have stood the test of time and have played a major role in surfboard development and design. The shaping legends are Spider Murphy, Mike Larmont and Graham Smith. It is hoped the event will inspire shapers of generations to come.

Surfboards that best illustrate the span of each shaper’s career will be on display at the La Montagne Hotel from 2 to 4 July. The surfboard collection will also feature boards to demonstrate the  progression of wave-riding from the ancient Hawaiian style ‘alaia’ surfboards to recent designs - including various iconic boards like Shaun Tomson’s Pipeline ‘Gun’ from the 70’s and Jordy Smith’s very first pro board.

Murphy, Smith and Larmont will all be in attendance on the evening of 3 July and will be interviewed about their career highlights and experiences shaping for world champions and title contenders. This will be a rare occasion for those interested in surfboard design to meet the experts and interact with them. Everyone passionate about the sport of surfing should be there. Holidaymakers can look forward to a great day on the beach in Durban with a maximum temperature of 25 degrees, clear sunny skies and WNW winds peaking at 28 km/hr on Monday.

Meanwhile, we have received news of good grunter fishing in Durban harbour over the past weekend. We are told that some nice specimens were caught on cracker shrimp. We have also heard of shad biting in the backline off uShaka on Saturday night. They were caught on both sardine and cracker baits.
