Amberjack success off Shelly Beach
Updated | By Staff Writer
North - Richards Bay down to Tugela has produced good numbers of garrick over the last week, mainly in the slightly bigger seas. These fish have been landed on most baits such as mackerel, shad and pinkies. The latter of which seems to be the preferred bait. One of the aforementioned baits rigged on a Mustad big gun size 4/0 or size 2 treble trawled as slow as possible on the backline will almost guarantee a bite. Tuna have been landed in the Zululand region, on Rattlers and on surface lures as well. The bite seems to have slowed down somewhat and anglers find themselves searching for fish.
Central - Tongaat down to Umhlanga saw many good catches of bottom fish, the majority of which being geelbek and daga. Rockcod and musselcracker have been landed on larger baits. When targeting musselcracker, be sure to use the strongest hook available to you, such as a Mustad Hoodlum or Cat Fish hook. These stand less of a chance of being crushed or opened by these immensely strong fish. Durban has fished well for bottoms, but failed to see much game fish activity. The current is relatively strong so make sure that when fishing deep that your choice of sinker is adequate.
South - Protea Banks have fished extremely well with many anglers hooking into good amberjack on a variety of presentations. Live bait seems to be the preferred method for the larger fish.
