ABSA ends title sponsorship deal with Premier Soccer League
Updated | By Gareth Jenkinson
South African banking giants ABSA and the Premier Soccer League have ended their title sponsorship deal after a 13 year relationship.
The announcement was confirmed by the Premier Soccer League on Thursday, bringing down the curtain on a long-standing relationship between the league and financial institution which began in 2007. The sponsorship deal will officially end at the conclusion of the current PSL season, which is currently suspended due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
The bank sponsored the ABSA Cup for three years before taking over as title sponsors of the PSL in 2007.
In a press release, ABSA indicated that it would like to remain involved in the football industry and was exploring other options to remain involved with the PSL.
“We have enjoyed a long, fruitful relationship with the PSL and have supported the PSL’s work in South African football and sports development. While we will no longer be the anchor sponsor for the PSL, soccer will always remain close to our hearts. We are therefore exploring alternative options to continue our relationship with the PSL, said Daniel Mminele, Chief Executive of Absa Group.
“We would like to thank the PSL and the football community for the excellent partnership and support over the years,” said Mminele.
There has been no announcements made by the PSL in regards to potential new title sponsors of the 2020/2021 PSL season.
