Zuma supporters turn up virtually

A longtime friend and supporter of Jacob Zuma says, although few in numbers, they’ll give the former president their unwavering support today.

 Zuma and co-accused French arms company, Thales are due back in the Pietermaritzburg High Court for criminal proceedings. They’re facing a string of charges, relating to a controversial multi-billion-rand deal that was struck in the late nineties. 


There isn’t likely to be much activity outside court as only 50 supporters will be allowed to gather under lockdown level 3 regulations. Speaking on behalf of Zuma's supporters, Carl Neihaus. 


"Only fifteen people which must include Zuma's family members and the media will be allowed inside the courtroom. So what we have done is to arrange a small meeting of supporters in the various provinces," said Neihaus.

He added that they have arranged to have the supporters on social media to post their support for Zuma, also to dress up in t-shirts and clothes to show their support for him. 



In February, Zuma was slapped with an arrest warrant after he failed to appear for a pre-trial hearing while undergoing medical treatment in Cuba. His court appearance, initially scheduled for May was postponed to today due to the coronavirus outbreak.
