Zuma opens case against Downer for 'unlawfully revealing medical information'
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Former president Jacob Zuma has laid criminal charges at the Pietermaritzburg police station against state prosecutor, Advocate Billy Downer.
In an affidavit, Zuma says Downer contravened sections of the NPA Act by unlawfully revealing his medical information through court papers leaked to a reporter.
He's asked the police to open a case and extend the charges to other persons mentioned in the documents he's submitted.
Downer is the lead prosecutor in Zuma's corruption trial.
The former president is seeking his recusal in the Pietermaritzburg High Court.
Judgment in his application is expected next week.
Spokesperson of the Jacob Zuma Foundation, Mzwanele Manyi, who accompanied the former president, believes it's a very serious matter.
"You have no right to take protected information and give it to journalists and even coach them afterwards.
"That on its own is a standalone; that is wrong. Whether there was a case or no case, it's a standalone wrongness and it's so serious that's it's punishable with a 15-year sentence or a fine or both."
