Zuma on strengthening the economy

President Jacob Zuma says the country's economy must not be treated in isolation to the rest of the global economic crisis.

He has called South Africa's economy a resilient one, adding that focus must be on ensuring that a credit status downgrade is prevented. 



The President mentioned a few areas the business sector has suggested be focused on to strengthen the economy.


"Amongst these points is a need to unite behind the National Development Plan, fiscal consolidation, improved management and governance of state owned enterprises. Promoting public-private partnerships especially in infrastructure development," he said. 


Zuma also announced that government tenders will no longer be advertised in newspapers. Instead, a central supplier database will be used for this purpose as from next month and will be accessible free of charge.


"And this [advertising in newspapers] will be another cost saver for government," he said.
