"We will rebuild the Dome": church members

Congregation members at the Durban Christian Centre in Mayville say the fire that destroyed their church last night will not douse their spirits.

The Jesus Dome adjacent to the N3 freeway was engulfed by flames.

Many of the congregation cried as they watched the popular auditorium burn to the ground.

The disaster comes just two weeks before a major conference was scheduled to take place there featuring international gospel singer, Donnie McClurkin.

Beverly Webster told Newswatch the fire also came at a time they were fasting. She says the church is her spiritual home.

Jesus Dome Fire: "It is heart-wrenching to see how this place has just come down."

"From here it just builds our faith and we go from glory to glory. It's going to be rebuilt just how they rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem - we will rebuild the dome," she said.

Emergency services at the scene say forensic investigators entered the structure late last night to begin their assessments and try determine what sparked the blaze.

Rescue Care's Garrith Jamieson says no injuries were reported.

"At this stage no injuries from the fire have been reported. However, one policeman was knocked whilst diverting traffic.  He was treated by Rescue Care paramedics and in a stable condition," he said.
