WATCH: Phoenix jewellery stores hit by robbers, looters
Updated | By Lauren Beukes
Police launched a manhunt for a gang of jewellery thieves who hit two stores at a Phoenix mall on Monday.
They also condemn the looting of the stores by bystanders who, after the robbers left, stole the remaining jewellery.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker says shots were fired by the suspects as they made a getaway, but no injuries were reported.
However, bullets were flying again when they ran into police.
"There was a shootout between the police officers and the suspects on the Phoenix Highway. The gang who were armed with high calibre firearms caused extensive damage to the police vehicle before fleeing with their loot.
"The police officers were able to escape unscathed during the attack. Police at Phoenix have assembled a team to hunt down the robbers.
"It is alleged that after the gang had fled, bystanders who witnessed the robbery, entered both stores and stole the remaining jewellery whilst threatening the highly traumatised staff.
He says charges of robbery will be pursued against those responsible for looting after the theft.
