Miss South Africa, Lalela Mswane has been crowned Second Runner-Up at the Miss Universe 2021 which was won by Miss India, Harnaaz Sandhu.
The pageant took place at the Universe Dome, Port of Eilat in Israel on Sunday.
The 24-year-old Mswane’s decision to participate in Miss Universe 2021 has been a subject of fierce debate since the announcement in October.
Some South Africans, civil rights groups, and political parties wanted Mswane to boycott the pageant in protest against Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians.
The South African government also withdrew its support for Miss SA to compete in the Miss Universe event.
However, Miss SA organisers said they cannot allow politics to interfere and withhold Mswane from realizing her "life-long dream to represent South Africa on the international stage"
In the last question at the Miss Universe stage, Mswane was asked if tweets and social media comments from a person in their teenage years should be held against them years later?
She answered, “I believe that everybody should be held accountable for their actions and if a person doesn’t know how to act on social media they should be cancelled.
"I believe in a cancel culture. In the same breath, I also believe in redemption culture and hoping that the person has matured, has learned better and can do better.”
