WATCH: Hundreds of school children protest in KwaMashu
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Hundreds of school children in KwaMashu are out on the streets protesting about the safety of young people in the area.
It's understood learners went around pulling other pupils from their classes at various schools this morning before going on their march.
Some say the protest was prompted by messages circulating on social media warning about school children being abducted.
Education officials and police have dismissed the messages as hoaxes.
While, they were headed to Bridge City Mall, they were stopped by police and addressed by a representative from the education department.
Foreign-owned shops in KwaMashu were looted and burned last night with locals accusing foreigners of kidnapping young girls.

Simphiwe Mbhele from the Community Safety and Liaison Department has again stressed that the messages are fake.
"Information has been circulating on social media - alleging that people kidnapping young girls are foreign nationals. However, it is not true," he said.
