The planned six-month closure of
the Umzimkhulu River Bridge in Port Shepstone has been put on hold.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport made the announcement on Wednesday.
The bridge was meant to be closed on Wednesday for urgent repairs, but officials said it will remain open for now.
Motorists had been advised to use the P464 or N2 toll-route as alternatives.
The bridge links Port Shepstone town to areas such as Umtentweni and Seapark and can be used to connect to Durban.

The department's Ndabezinhle Sibiya said they will be meeting with stakeholders.
"We are in agreement that will take place this coming weekend on Sunday with the relevant key stakeholders so that we are able to guide and plan the alternative routes so that members of the public are also not inconvenienced."
Sibiya said the repairs need to be done.
"The bridge was severely destroyed by the floods. It's a very old bridge that needs urgent rehabilitation."
