Umhlatuze Water blames copper thieves for water supply issues
Updated | By Nomfundo Ngcobo
uMhlathuze Water says it has lost components worth nearly R1.5-million this year to thieves.
The water utility says wholesale theft of critical parts from its bulk water supply pipelines has put communities and industries at risk of rolling water shortages.
It's believed criminals are selling them to scrap metal dealers.

uMhlathuze's Sphamandla Maphumulo says Richards Bay and surrounds have been having serious water supply issues - with some areas going days without proper supply.
"Since the beginning of the year, the water facility has lost components such as distilled chamber lids, valves and brackets.
"These thefts have far-reaching implications and could lead to operational disturbances at large industries that rely on us for a large supply of bulk water. We equally appeal to communities to blow the whistle on those found in possession of our equipment," he said.
