Two suspects who have been charged with dealing in elephant tusks are due to line up in a KwaDukuza court in March next year.
The 27 and 57-year-olds were released on bail at the Kwadukuza Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
They were nabbed on Tuesday by the Hawks, who received information that tusks were being sold at the Zimbali Eco Estate.
"An undercover operation was conducted at Zimbali Eco Estate and members swooped in on the suspects’ residence," says Hawks spokesperson Simphiwe Mhlongo.
"Upon searching the premises, members found 1.3 kilogram of ivory pieces, 14 wharthog teeth, 19 pieces of sperm whale teeth, four ivory carvings, two hippo teeth, 47 ivory chop sticks and 15 elephant tusks with the street value of approximately R400 000.
"The two suspects were then placed under arrest and charged accordingly."
