Truck curfew on KZN roads 'not the way to go' - RFA
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
The Road Freight Association has come out strongly against any plans to restrict truck movements by means of a curfew.
Over the last few days, KwaZulu-Natal's roads have been seen several accidents which have involved heavy-goods trucks.
One of them is the Pongola head-on crash between a truck and a bakkie carrying school children which killed 20 people, 18 of whom were children.
Following this, Zululand municipal officials have called for a ban on truck movements during the day.

According to the ban, trucks would not be permitted on roads between 6am and 6pm.
In its statement, the Road Freight Association clearly states this is a very badly informed call and is not the way to go.
It's outlined a number of problems with the idea, such as that trucks would only be operating at night when there is reduced visibility.
It also says during this time there would be little to no law enforcement on the roads.

The association lastly states that the limited night movement window period would create what it calls a storm flood of vehicles all trying to get to destinations before sunrise.
It says this will undo the hard work its been doing of getting trucks off the road at night.
The suggested logistics curfew also comes as Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula has, on social media, suggested moving trucks from roads to rail.
