Transport promises safer train services for Durban commuters

Safer journeys by train is what the Department of Transport is promising to Durban commuters and operators.

Minister Fikile Mbalula and railway safety regulators inspected the Bayhead Wagon Maintenance Depot, south of Durban yesterday.

It forms part of government's 100-Day Plan to turn the situation of railways in the country around.  

Mbalula says the department will table a bill to help combating crime on the tracks.

"Later this year we will be tabling before Parliament a Railway Safety Bill that seeks to strengthen our railway safety model and ensure tighter alignment with police in addressing incidents of personal safety and crime."

Last month, an unoccupied train was stolen from a depot by two men who drove it for 12km to Umkomaas.

Mbalula says pre-departure inspections are a must to help prevent accidents before they occur.
